As an English Language Arts teacher and a STEM educator, Alice L. Smith believes in helping students become persuasive communicators, problem solvers, and creative innovators. Her workshop classroom structure is fully collaborative: it's a place where students work in groups to direct their own learning, the teacher facilitates the process, and student voice is paramount. All units of study in Ms. Smith’s classroom adhere to a strategic scope and sequence designed by educators in the Adams 12 Five Star School District to help students build proficiency in the common core state standards. Additionally, as a STEM educator, she incorporates inquiry-based learning, transdisciplinary learning, 21st century skills (including technology), and a problem-based approach into her daily instructional practice.
Some of Ms. Smith’s professional affiliations include the Adams 12 STEM Advisory team, Denver Writing Project, Colorado Language Arts Society, and the National Council of Teachers of English. In a variety of capacities she has designed and facilitated professional development for teachers in the areas of reading and writing instruction as well as STEM education. Prior to becoming an educator, Ms. Smith worked in the marketing field for a civil engineering firm and a healthcare company, and she regularly draws upon that experience when designing educational opportunities for her students. Some of her personal interests include jogging, cooking, movies, reading, and writing.
